Associate Professor of Economics in the School of Business, Dr. David Chaplin, presented “Pugilistic Pastoring”: Volunteering in Amateur Boxing as Missionary Work” (co-authored with John Harris of Glasgow Caledonian University) at the British Society of Sports History on June 8th. In his presentation, Dr. Chaplin provided evidence of the success of amateur boxing programs in the U.S. and U.K. serving at-risk youth and the long-term unemployed by instilling discipline and structure to the participants’ lives and providing them an alternative to idleness. One of the organizers tweeted live from the event and even quoted Dr. Chaplin’s work (see below).
